Ocean University was originally established in 1953 as a junior college for the studies of maritime science and technology. After eleven years, in 1964, it became a maritime college which offered bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various fields of maritime studies. During this period, funds for running the college came from the government of Taiwan Province, the Republic of China. In 1979 the national government took over the funding and it was called National Maritime College. After another decade, in 1989, it grew into a fully-fledged university, National Taiwan Ocean University.
At present the university has four colleges, namely maritime science, fishery science, science and engineering, and technology. There are thirteen departments and seventeen graduate schools and eight of which offer programs leading to doctorate degrees. In the forty-four years since its founding, the university has grown tremendously, and is now recognized as one of the nation’s important centers of learning and scholarship, specially in the fields of maritime research and studies.
Since this university was originally founded as an institution of higher learning in maritime science and technology, we think it is necessary to offer courses in general education to our students. And we have made plans for setting up programs in social science and liberal arts. In the foreseeable future the University will be able to provide a superb environment for intellectual and personal growth. |
