1‧To establish an organizational system for extension of fishery technologies
To coordinate with aquaculture areas, offshore and coastal aquaculture areas, and cage aquaculture; to form study groups and organizations on fisheries affairs; to offer guidance on organizational operation; and, to cultivate a foundation for extension works in fishing villages. At present, all fishermen's associations have set up organizational structures for extension of fishery technologies and have chosen qualified young fishermen to form study groups on fishery, 4-H operational groups, study groups on improvement of home economics, and to carry out professional education,
(1)Study Group on Fishery Matters
Study group meetings are held regularly. It is through the vehicle of study groups on fishery matters theat fishermen are instructed and taught the following skills: how to carry out fishery operations, how to conserve and utilize fishery resources, and how to market fish products. They also learm knowledge and skills related to cage aquaculture.
(2)4-H Operational Organization
Those members who participate and are organized in the 4-H clubs are youths and juveniles from fishing villages between the ages of 9 and 24. In order to cultivate the next generation
's fishermen as talented and healthy nationals, lectures on etiquette, norms, and fishery skills and training in specialties are often given at the 4-H group meetings. In addition, activities such as social gatherings, outdoor camping, and presentations on personal experiences are held to help carry out the educational philosophy of "on the job learning," the spirit of "second best is not good enough, " and the practice of using hands, brain, body, and heart all together.
(3)Extension Educational works in Home Economics
To organize study groups in home economics; to enhance home and professional education; to assess fishermen's health and nutrition; to assist and guide fishermen to set up a healthy lifestyle; to assist and guide the elders to set up self-governing organizations; to enrich the elder's personal lives; to strengthen the awareness of and guidance on environmental protection education and beautifying fishing villages; and, to assist and guide women in fishing villages to develop subsidiary works to help improve family livelihood.
(4)Extension of Fishing Villages' Industrial Culture
To develop fishing villages' industrial culture; to preserve fishing villages' existing cultural traits; to consolidate fishermen's community consciousness; to rebuild fishing villages' ethics; to establish characters of local fishery products through cultural activities; to promote the development of fishery industries; and, to raise funds to buld fishery cultural museums to exhibit fishing villages' historical relics so that local culture can be preserved.
2‧To Put Electronic Education Into Effect
To collect domestic and foreign information on new fishery techniques, methods and equipment. To compile and publish all kinds of teaching materials relating to fishery, and to select some of those lectures to produce film, video, and slide teaching materials which will be circulated in fishing villages for the purpose of improving teaching effectiveness.
3‧To Publish Magazines and Special Issues on Fisheries
Taiwan's Provisional Fishermen's Associations regional fishermen's associations regularly issue publications such as Fisherman Manazine and regional Fisheries Information, which aim at introducing fishery techniques, fishery policy, and fishery development, and at disseminating fishery alarm messages. The publications are distributed free of charge for reference to people involved in fisheries at different levels. They are also used for promoting general teaching on fishery extension.
